8th Of August | Emancipation Day Celebration
Friday, August 8th, 5pm - 8pm EST
ELAhouse
3835 Hale Avenue Louisville, KY 40211
WEWC is proud to host ‘8th of August’, where we plan to honor Kentucky’s Emancipation Day with a family reunion-style event where our goal is building collective memory around joyous celebrations in Black space.
In 1863 the 8th of August emerged, marking the day the Tennessee Military Governor emancipated the people he personally enslaved, including Sam Johnson. Greenville, TN witnessed the first recorded celebration of this event and the tradition quickly spread as Johnson established the 8th of August across five states, including Kentucky. Black folks in Southwestern Kentucky carry on the tradition today, though they cite different origins. WEWC began celebrating 8th of August in 2023 by unveiling the Land Story of our property at 40th and Hale in the form of the book “1 1/4”, which details the history of the land from its Indigenous roots through the eras of Reconstruction, Redlining, and Gentrification. In 2024 8th of August we crafted a zine featuring West End neighbors reflections on Emancipation titled 1.50. In 2025 we will debut a map of places of Resistance and Joy in the West End.
